Model of a tooth with a king's crownMost people would agree that getting dental work isn’t exactly their favorite thing to do. But what complicates matters even further is the amount of time it takes out of your busy schedule to come in for your appointments. And any procedure that requires two visits, such as getting a dental crown, is particularly inconvenient. At least, it used to be – until same day crowns came along! Now, not only do you get a crown that looks and feels great, but you only have to come in once instead of twice. Talk about a win-win situation! But how does this technology work – and is the end result really as good as a traditional crown? Keep reading to find out!

How Are Same Day Crowns Made?

These crowns are made using a type of technology called E4D, which is essentially CAD/CAM (computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacture) being used chairside in a dental office.

With a traditional crown, you would have messy, uncomfortable impressions taken so that molds of your teeth could be sent to a dental lab. If these impressions aren’t done right the first time, they have to be taken twice to make sure they’re accurate.

Then it takes the lab about two weeks to make your permanent crown, during which time you would have to wear a temporary crown before coming back for the second visit.

With E4D, everything is done in one appointment and in-office. Instead of having impressions taken, a very small camera is used to scan a 3-D image of your tooth that’s incredibly accurate. Then this information is put into a computer that custom-makes your crown right on the spot.

Your new, permanent crown is placed immediately, so there’s no need to come back a second time!

Are They as Strong as Traditional Crowns?

Same day crowns are made from porcelain, a very strong material that also looks very natural. They’re just as strong as traditional crowns and will last many years with basic care and maintenance (i.e., brushing, flossing and routine dental care).

Just like a traditional crown, your dentist will make any minor adjustments to make sure your same day crown fits perfectly and feels great. But since the crown was so accurately made using computer-assisted technology, there will hardly be any adjustment that needs to be done. It will also be matched precisely to the rest of your smile so that it blends in seamlessly.

With a same day crown, you’ll have a smile that looks and feels great – in only one appointment!
